Should I upgrade my CPU or GPU first? Usually the GPU
For most gaming PCs the graphics card is the better first upgrade, and our FPS model shows why. Take a common pairing, a Ryzen 5 5600 with an RTX 4060. Swapping only the card for an RTX 5070 lifts Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p on High from an estimated 60 to 100 FPS, and Fortnite at 1440p from 110 to 190 FPS. Swapping only the processor for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which on this PC also means a new motherboard and memory, moves Cyberpunk from 60 to 65 FPS and Fortnite from 110 to 125. The card was the limit, so the faster processor mostly waits for it. One fix comes before either upgrade: if the PC has less than 16 GB of RAM, add memory first, because running short causes stutter that neither a new processor nor a new card will cure.
When is the processor the real bottleneck?
The processor usually becomes the limit in three situations: you play at 1080p with a fast card, you chase 240 FPS in esports titles, or your games simulate a lot at once, as Escape from Tarkov, Rust, Minecraft and the large modes of Warzone and Battlefield 6 do. Our model shows the pattern clearly. After that RTX 5070 upgrade, the Ryzen 5 5600 build gets 160 FPS in Warzone at both 1080p and 1440p and 80 FPS in Tarkov at both, so lowering the resolution gains nothing. With a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and the same card, the estimates rise to 260 and 140 FPS at 1080p. Minecraft tells the same story even with the RTX 4060: 325 FPS with the Ryzen 5 5600 against 570 FPS with the 9800X3D, both at 1080p on High.
How do I tell if my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU?
You can test your own PC in a few minutes. First turn off any frame cap and V-Sync, because a capped frame rate makes both parts look underused. Then play the same scene at 1080p and at 1440p, or change the render scale. If the frame rate barely moves, the processor is the limit; if it rises sharply at the lower resolution, the graphics card is. A performance overlay, such as the one built into your graphics driver, gives a second clue: a graphics card running close to 100% usage is the bottleneck, while one well below that with FPS under your target points to the processor, often to one or two busy cores rather than all of them. Finally, compare your result with our estimate for the same pairing. If you are far below it, check drivers, temperatures and whether the memory profile (XMP or EXPO) is switched on before you buy anything.
Does a new processor mean a new motherboard?
Often it does, and that changes what the upgrade really costs. On AM4 (Ryzen 1000 to 5000), the strongest gaming upgrade that drops into an existing board is an X3D chip such as the Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D, if you can still find one, and an older board may need a BIOS update first. A Ryzen 7000 or 9000 processor needs the AM5 socket, which means a new motherboard and DDR5 memory, because AM5 does not support DDR4. On the Intel side, 12th, 13th and 14th generation Core processors share the LGA1700 socket, so a board bought for a Core i5-12400F can usually take a 13th or 14th generation chip after a BIOS update. Core Ultra 200S processors need an LGA1851 board and DDR5. When a new board and new memory are part of the deal, the graphics card upgrade usually wins on value.
Will a new graphics card fit and run in my PC?
Three things decide it: power, connectors and length. A faster card usually draws more power, and our estimate moves with it: the pairing page for a Ryzen 5 5600 with an RTX 4060 shows a 305 W load and recommends a 500 W supply, while the same processor with an RTX 5070 comes to 467 W and a 650 W recommendation. The supply also needs the right plugs, either 8-pin PCIe or the 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector used by many newer cards, NVIDIA ones in particular, and the card has to fit within your case's maximum graphics card length, with some room left for cables. Current cards work in older PCIe x16 slots, although budget cards wired for eight lanes can lose some speed in a PCIe 3.0 slot. The builder checks card length, wattage and connectors against the case and power supply you pick.
Does a Ryzen 7 5800X bottleneck an RX 9060 XT?
This is a typical pairing question, and our model answers it one pairing at a time. The Ryzen 7 5800X with an RX 9060 XT comes out balanced at 1080p, 1440p and 4K, with an estimated 185 FPS in Fortnite at 1080p and 75 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p, both on High. The 5800X stays balanced with cards up to about RX 9070 XT level, and only from an RTX 5070 Ti upward does our model show the processor starting to hold the card back. The Core i5-13400F with an RTX 4060 and the Ryzen 5 7600 with an RTX 5060 are rated balanced too, with only the card limiting at 4K. In short, an older mid-range processor is rarely a reason to skip a mid-range graphics card. Once you have picked one, its product page shows the price history and can alert you when the price drops.
